About

The Program for the Investment in Micro Entrepreneurs

ยท Data on the number of micro businesses in the US and Maine is compiled by James C. McConnon, Jr., Extension Business and Economics Specialist and Professor of Economics, University of Maine.

The Program for the Investment in Micro Entrepreneurs - PRIME - was established within the US Small Business Administration in 1999 to address the training and technical assistance needs of the 25,459,291* micro-businesses in the US.  Micro enterprises are defined as businesses with five or fewer employees, including the owner.

In Maine there are 137,419 micro businesses and they employ a total of 176,610 individuals, representing 21.3% of all employment in the state. (2008 data)

PRIME recognizes the many individuals who have good ideas and entrepreneurial drive yet may lack access to resources or business expertise that can support their success.

Women, Work, and Community and the Maine SBDC have teamed up to help Maine's micro enterprises invest in themselves, their businesses and their communities.
