Veterans Business Ownership Act of 2011

I thought this was a very good idea and wanted to revisit this after seeing some negative responses in a few forums (by vets). My understanding is that the American Legion supports it, but the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) does not.

VFW's says that the purpose of the GI Bill is to provide education, training and the skills to help veterans succeed, not to provide business financing.

American Legion says that not every veteran will go to college and the benefits need to be more accessible for veterans that want to build a business.

Paralyzed Veterans of America also support the bill.

I just can't leave this alone, and it seems others can't leave it alone either.

"Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow veterans to cash in their educational benefits for money toward starting up their own small businesses."

"One of the VFW's concerns is that many small businesses fail. Soldiers could come home from war and use their educational benefits to start a business that quickly goes bust."

A majority of businesses fail every year. What should be taught in transition classes is some basic startup for those who (like me), feel that college is not for them for whatever reason. The money would be better spent on encouraging these brave souls in their endeavor. The SBA would have more focus and maybe funding. Cashing the GI Bill money out sure would have helped me in my first business, which failed because my financial backer backed out without notice, even though I was already becoming successful. I did not need a large amount of money, but, as any small business owner will tell you, when you start a business, you marry the business. My workday started at 3 a.m. and ended at 7 p.m. when I fell asleep wherever I landed (once in the gargage!).
