| Case Study: Entrepreneurship Lessons from a Maine Start-up From its headquarters on the Portland waterfront, MariCal develops and licenses innovative solutions addressing the critical problems faced by the world's aquaculture industry for both marine and freshwater organisms. MariCal has isolated the biological "thermostat," or "master switch," that enables fish to sense and respond to nutrients and salinity/ionic composition in their aquatic environment. Founded in 1996 as AquaBio Products Sciences, MariCal now supplies a global marketplace, operates 10,500 square feet of space dedicated to research and development activities and collaborates with scientists internationally.
How does a northern New England technology-based company grow from modest beginnings to a leading position in the marketplace? How does a start-up develop customers, protect its intellectual property, secure capital, and attract the right employees? How does the future look for growing biotechnology and marine science firms in Maine? Come hear a case study of experienced entrepreneurship from one of the firm’s founders.
Presenter: William Harris, Ph.D, founded MariCal with research scientists Steve Hebert, M.D., and Edward Brown, M.D. Dr. Harris is internationally recognized as an expert on epithelial cell biology and body water metabolism, and as such has served on many international committees, authored over 150 publications and is co-inventor on 18 issued patents.
