USM is made up of eight academic units (Applied Science, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Development, Law, Lewiston-Auburn College, Nursing, and the Muskie School of Public Service); it is the largest of the seven campuses in the University of Maine System; it offers associate and baccalaureate degree programs, as well as graduate and professional degrees.

The Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) at USM's mission is to provide consulting/research capacity and technical assistance to Maine's government as well as profit and non-profit organizations through the combined expertise of faculty, staff, and students from the School of Business, the Muskie School of Public Service, and other colleges at the University of Southern Maine. Business services include market research, forecasting, strategic planning, quality management, and application software development. It also conducts applied research involving the design and testing of innovative economic development strategies; feasibility studies; design and administration of surveys; economic analysis, modeling, and forecasting; and other forms of customized business/economic analysis.

The Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB), based at USM, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting family-owned businesses in Maine. It assists family-owned firms in meeting the unique managerial challenges associated with operating and sustaining a successful family enterprise. By working with the Institute, firms identify which family dynamics most often affect business decisions and learn how to overcome these hurdles to continued growth and profitability. Institute-sponsored seminars and workshops help companies in addressing topics of interest to them

The Maine Patent Program's mission is to support economic development by helping Maine inventors and small businesses understand how to identify and protect their intellectual property. The program provides help on what needs to be done to obtain and maintain legal rights on ideas if possible, and also to provide assistance with the patent process to those who qualify.

Maine Small Business Development Centers (Maine SBDC) provide comprehensive business management assistance, training and information services to Maine's micro and small business community. Maine SBDC is a partnership program of the U. S. Small Business Administration.

The Department of External Programs (EP) is a service unit within the School of Applied Science at USM. Its mission is to develop and maintain linkages between the school and the business, industry, and educational communities. These linkages are created through the delivery of programs, which include non-credit continuing education; on site academic courses; research; consulting; testing; and student internships. To best serve the needs of its clients, EP utilizes the facilities and faculty of the School of Applied Science, as well as the expertise of private consultants and business andindustry professionals.

The mission of the Technology Law Center is to support technological innovation and economic growth in Maine by providing educational opportunities in intellectual property, e-commerce and other technology-related law to students, practicing attorneys and Maine businesses. The Center administers the Maine Patent Program, a service program established in 2000 to provide education and advice on the patent process to Maine inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
